Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to close varicose veins by injecting a medical solution, called a sclerosant, directly into the affected vein. This solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse, seal shut, and gradually be absorbed by the body. Then, blood is naturally redirected to healthier veins. Your doctor can use the sclerosant as a liquid for smaller veins or transform it into a foam for larger varicose veins. This allows a better contact with the vein walls. In simple terms, the foam fills the vein, pushes blood aside, and ensures the solution acts directly where it’s needed.
Is sclerotherapy painful?
Most patients describe the sensation as mild discomfort, similar to a small pinprick. The needles are very fine, and the procedure is generally well tolerated.
